Varanasi or Kashi: The oldest inhabited city in the world, is situated on the banks of the river Ganges and is the abode of Shiva. This city has several layers of civilization!
The culture is unique to Varanasi and nothing looks as Indian as Kashi. The night aarti, the flower sellers at the ghats, the sound of the Sitar ( musical instrument ) emanating from the old buildings. Every industrialist has his own mansion on the ghats.
The city of Kashi,believed to have been built by Lord Shiva, is his favourite abode. Therefore there are numerous festivals related to Him, be it the Shravan month or Shivratri. Pilgrims come from all over the world to pay obeisance to Shri Kashi Vishwanath.
10 kms from Varanasi, Sarnath is one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrim centres. After attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, it was here that Lord Buddha preached his first sermon, sanctified as Maha Dharma Chakra Pravartan ( Set in Motion the Wheel of DHARMA ).
Varanasi or the ancient city of Kashi, is the place where one ends one’s journey on earth to find solace and rest!
